I came up with the chorus somewhere around 4 years ago and saved it for the right verse idea to come along. The chorus finally found a home about 2 years ago when I wanted to challenge myself creatively to write what I would describe as a “dramatic break-up song”. I wanted to do this because it's such a powerfully emotional event which is the perfect match for the melodrama that you can get away with only in songwriting (oh and in spanish soap-operas!). In one sense, this was a difficult song to write and A REAL creative challenge as I personally have never been in a “breakup” myself (fortunately!) so I naturally have trouble relating to the main character of this song (this might be ironic and even humorous to many). So it was a project of empathy for me. I did however have something to share, an observation, something to add to the topic, since I've known people who have been through these experiences, so I went ahead with writing it. A lot of people (kids) get too serious and make relationship choices before they feel secure in their own identity (their relationship with God and understanding of themselves). Since Amy and I got married very young, some people doubted that it could "work", but here’s the difference, Amy and I both knew who we were and were secure in our, and each others, identities. I had no clue what career I would fall into for certain, but I knew who I was and I knew I wanted to spend my life with her. So, This is a piece whose main character (the singer) is based on a composite of a guy I knew (who will go unnamed) and a fictitious character (in order to make the story more colorful/interesting). I wrote it and thought it would be ideal for pitching to other artists. But since we decided to record this album for the main purpose of pitching to TV/Film we included it on the album as a dramatic piece. At first I wasn't sure about including it, but when I asked Amy’s opinion she said I should definitely include it. So I did.
